While we adore all of our clients and the beautiful structures which we help fill and adorn, like a parent adores all of their children, this recent mid-century modern interior design project was a particular delight. This client, a smart, energetic, creative, happy person, a man who, in-person, presents as refined and understated — he wanted color. Lots of color. When we introduced some color, he wanted even more color: Bright pops; lively art.
In February, I had the opportunity to speak on a panel about the subject of Designing for Millennials, hosted by Artistic Tile. Part of a daylong event celebrating the design industry at the San Francisco Design Center, the panel included myself and my colleagues, Lizette Marie Bruckstein […]
The before-and-after I am sharing with you in today’s blog post is not just about making a house into a home, or about making over a home into something infinitely more beautiful, welcoming, and authentic to the family that purchased it.
Although all those things are true.
This story is also about choosing to “go green.”
Family Room, BEFORE:
We recently completed a project with a client in San Rafael. An Eichler. Eichler and Marin County are practically synonymous. Words like development, basic, and cookie-cutter might come to mind but are quickly replaced by the pleasures of simplicity, spaciousness, and lightness that an Eichler, especially a […]
This magical Spanish Mediterranean Piedmont estate had been in the same family for nearly a century, with few changes made to the interior. (An “update” to the kitchen appliances in the 1970s is better left unmentioned, although photographic evidence is provided, below.)

Applying minimal structural changes (we removed a wall between the kitchen and dining areas) and strategic choices regarding high-quality design elements, we created a space that is serene and inspiring, bright and varied; elegantly spare with […]
Rugs are adornment, accent, art. Fashion and function. They create frame and foreground, pulling a room together, defining the area where activity takes place, anchoring the feet of our furniture and cushioning the feet of our bodies. We sink our toes in, brush our soles across them.
These days, because of computer technology, any design one […]
Our design for this Historic Piedmont Tudor home demonstrates the “New Tradish;” where grand old houses are not so stuffy anymore. We partnered with the new owners of a historically significant architectural classic in Piedmont (one of the “Three sisters,” a trio of Jacobian Tudors designed by architect Houghton Sawyer and built in 1923) to create a […]
Before-and-After montages are the bread-and-butter of our hearts when it comes to interior design. Who does not love a good transformation?
Here are the After images, followed by their Before personae:
You and your home are in a relationship.
From the moment you buy it, you are the steward. This is especially true of the many grand historic homes in Piedmont, California.
To do the job well, it is important to be mindful of the house itself; the way it […]
